There is a great player who strongly believes that you cannot do a "proper" slur on a rotary valve instrument and there is some merit to this in the hands of a seasoned player. What I have found switching between quitet (rotary) and symphonic (piston) instruments is that, if your air is not working effectively the piston valve instrument makes it easier to hide this weakness. Whereas on the rotary horn the slurs will be inconsistent if the air is not continuous.
These are just my observations.
