I've seen what electrician's tape does to (even tough Mirafone lacquer) tubas. The Tennessee Tech guys, back in the late 1970's / early 1980's, were all "into" this (black elec. tape wrapped all around their tubas) for some reason. I removed the tape from one once and the lacquer was absolutely devastated - along with the brass.

Leather has tannic acid in it...full of sulfur...which also eats up lacquer and brass.

You can rig up something made from naugahyde and cord, but it will not prevent even small dents from occuring.

(Maybe forget it.)
