I think that you find balance by playing in a mix of groups and building name recognition in the local community. Provide service to the community by playing in groups that are "below you", and eventually you will discover (and be discovered by) the group that is "just right". You may even get the call to sub from time to time in the group that is "too good" to havce you on a regular basis.

I suspect there's also a little Groucho Marx going on here (Joe Baker made a similar allusion last week). Many players (esp. amateurs) are of the opinion that "I wouldn't play with any group that would have me as a member". One aspect of being a "pro" is showing up and putting up with all sorts of stuff (such as playing with lesser talents) in exchange for money.
