You probably don't need to be told this, but it does NOT go half-way down the bell. For some reason, this has been the initial result almost every single time someone other than me has been responsible for the placement. Sorry, I don't have any supreme technical experience with this, although I usually place the mic suspended a foot or two above the bell (others with more experience can feel free to disagree).
