On the beats/intonation topic.....you could take in an electric guitar (just about every high school student is interested in that, right?) and demonstrate tuning it with beats (which of course you'd need to know how to do.) The best way to tune a guitar is with the 5th and 7th fret harmonics, which can come through quite loudly and clearly with an amplifier; then after demonstrating making the beats faster and slower by turning the tuning pegs....you could let students try it themselves and get the guitar into tune. This easily will take up 10 to 15 minutes, and I bet you'd get good participation too. You could also demnonstrate how different the basic chords sounded with an in-tune and an out-of-tune electric guitar.
