I have been a manufacturing engineer for over 30 years. Seeing more and more manufacturing jobs leaving the US is very difficult for me to swallow, but very easy to understand. The availability of cheap (and quite often very good) imports is what makes the US economy very good. The US manufacturing base is dwindling but the focus has turned from production to sales and service. Most people don't have a clue what the true manufacturing cost is on the stuff they purchase. There's a lot more money to be made in sales that in manufacturing... always has been.
