Floyd sounds pretty good on John Adams 'Fast Ride In A Time Machine', at least I think it is that piece. I don't remember the label or conductor, but I do remember that it was the SFSO/Floyd, 'cause it was recorded in the late '80s, we had to listen to it for a theory listening exam last year. He has a very warm sound on it. I don't know if I would call his sound heavy though. It is certainly dark, but is also transparent and 'beach-ball like', meaning it sounded buoyant to me. I think of Chester Schmitz's sound as being dark and heavy, especially during his first decade or so(66'-(AT)76', 80'), then he started backing off a little after around the late 70's-80's. Both great players.
