You may start on a 12c or a 6 1/2 AL, but remember, these are mouthpieces designed for trombone playing. I think it is important for a beginner euphonium student to be given the proper tools to produce a characteristic sound as early as possible. Many of my students start on smaller mouthpieces such as these, but once they have developed the proper skills (usually in the first 4-6 months), I'll switch them to a larger euphonium style mouthpiece, such as the Schilke 51D. As you get older and more serious about your playing, you can experiment with mouthpieces specifically designed for the euphonium (the Steven Mead or Brian Bowman lines are excellent).

The most important thing to remember is to find a knowledgeable euphonium teacher to help you through the process. As you are going to find out, there are many opinions on this matter, but only yours counts!

Good Luck!
