Here's one for you; in 1994 the Army's Berlin Brigade Band diposed of all the equipment that did not go to the museums or back to America. We had some music from the mid-forties, a 56 passenger bus, a lot of instruments paid for by the German government (4 HB BBbs, 13 assorted sousaphones, and most of the rest of the band's instruments). If memory serves me correct (it has been ten years), first dibs went to the player. In most cases the purchase price was 1/10th of the depreciated value. So the HBs went for less than 5 franklins. Painful you say? Marimbas and tympani also went at the reduced rate. I think a fox bassoon went for about 220 bucks! Certainly a good deal for those last few who walked 110 miles behind the Iron Curtain.
