Almost relevant; a while back my violin repair guy was encouraging me to try a modern violin because the construction was such to make it easier to play. He happened to have one for someone else and let me have it for a week. The Tucson Symphony has quite a few players who have instruments by this modern maker.
I took the new violin and my own violin to a good room at a local high school, and played the same passages on both, covering the range; and I recorded it. While I was playing, they sounded about the same to me. But after I got home and listened to the recording, my own violin was obviously superior in tone quality, although the other one was easier to play as promised. I took the other one back and thanked him for the opportunity.
