.. into my head by an endless array of Sergeant's Major and assorted Commanders over the decades and something I've used myself for years. Being a log toad myself there was always the danger that the units would slip into complacency, "We're just mechanics/ parts guys/ truckers....". We don't have time to spend on FTX's/ ranges/ proper convoy procedures." Hence, arguably, the 507th fiasco (my take as an Ordnance COL). It worries me, especially for specialties outside the military mainstream such as musicians, lawyers, medical specialists, that the soldiers sometimes lose sight of the fact that though certainly they are normally fully engaged in demanding activities within those specialties they are still soldiers. I know in Europe the band assigned to my Command was to perform duties as Tactical Operations Center security and, if required, auxiliary graves registration personnel in the event of hostilities. Not exactly the skirling bagpipes marching in the front rank to put the fear of the highlands into the heathens; but roles which require some proficiency with handling a rifle and operating in muddy boots and BDU's. Recruiters, (you can tell when they're lying- their lips are moving...) sometimes gloss over the hard facts of the matter. Right now I'm out as an RA IG in National Guardland and I can assure you that recent events came as a really unpleasant surprise to many who joined to get college paid for....
Long answer- my apologies-
Henry
