I have owned a 3 valve 1960s vintage Olds for the past 17 years. It is my horn of choice for playing most of the time. It plays well and in tune, and has a good sound. It doesn't have a terrifically large sound, but then it's not a large horn. It has integrated very well into small groups and it nicely compliments tuba sections in larger ensembles. Its value to me is that it plays nicely and is easy to handle physically.

I also have an Olds sousaphone, which is probably at least a 5/4 tuba. It is also about a 1960s vintage horn. It has worked very well for me in summer bands and a Dixieland group. It's biggest disadvantage is that it is rather heavy.
