The problem as I see it is that the Education Establishment has different objectives than putting knowledge into the heads of kids. If their objectives were thus, then they would be better at it, even those who are not the "rare birds". The main reason the rare birds are rare is because they are willing to buck the system to stay focused on learning, rather than on indoctrination of objectives not related to learning.

The most widely read and literate English teacher will still achieve little if he or she is focused solely on using literature to teach or debunk particular world views rather than teaching the skills needed to understand and convey (rather than evaluate) any world view. But the most unread and inarticulate English teacher will accomplish useful things if he or she puts good literature in front of the students, and gives them tests to make sure they read it. That is, real literature that has stood the test of time, not the short stories written by other Education Establishment authors for literature textbooks.
