It's historical--the Wiener Pumpen were the predecessors of our modern valves. However, there are still some Austrian hornists who say that the WP's are the only way to go...

At about the same time, Berliner Pumpen were also used. Essentially a square rotary valve that, instead of turning, went up and down.; The problem there is that the valve casing must be more than twice the bore size, which leaves the valve keys spaced pretty widely on large-bore instruments.

There is also the old Holton short-stroke valve--a kind of linear rotary valve that's piston-shaped, with all of the ports lined up in a row on one side of the casing.
