Nickel plating nowadays has become synonymous with "cheap". Nickel's easier to plate and much cheaper than silver. And done badly, it's amazingly sharp when it peels.
Some experience contact dermatitis with nickel, while fewer have the same problem with silver.
But then, I recall that Kotato's double contrabass flute (not cheap by any means) is chromium-plated.
