If you or your student's family have the time and interest, check out music repair shops (for unclaimed or not paid for items), auctions, old music stores that have used instruments (the equivalent of a musical instrument junk yard is best), pawn shops, antique dealers, for sale section of your local paper and even yard sales. I have seen very inexpensive 3 (sometimes even 4) valve E flat tubas as well as BB flat tubas and sousaphones in all of these settings. Remember, it usually takes time and patience dealing with these sources, but sometimes you can get very lucky (I have), and it can be fun.
