I can't legitimately tell you to try out NEXT year with an F or Eb tuba, because I was a finalist at the annual Interlochen summer concerto competition once upon a time playing that very piece with a CC and a large mouthpiece...(I believe, however, that a bit more experience with the piece [started working on it AT Interlochen], an F tuba, and a smaller mouthpiece might have helped me with the edge that I needed.)

I, however, encourage you to use an F tuba or to select a different piece. A Schilke 69C4 will help you through the 2nd movement on your CC, however.

Unless your skills are approaching those of Roger Bobo, the Vaughan Williams tuba concerto doesn't impress most (non-tuba playing) committees particularly favorably. If anything, play the third movement (only) with driving speed, crystal clarity, and fire. Are you required to perforn an entire concerto?
