Chuck had a great sound on all his recordings, many with the teeny-weenie YCB-621 3/4 sized CC. Microphone placement is critical, and a good recording studio can make a modest instrument sound much larger than it would in a live venue.

I recently heard the CB in Indianapolis, and they were great. However, the tuba did not dominate the sound of the group at all. It didn't seem to sound as large live as the 3/4 Yamaha does on the CDs. IMO it could have been louder/bigger and the results even more impressive. Chuck's tuba now is a bigger Yamaha, allegedly with a .768 bore and a 17.5 inch bell (carbon fiber, with the word "Yamaha" tastefully decorating the black bell in large, bold white letters . . . .)
