I enjoyed your reference to the thoughts of Mahler, and I agree with them wholeheartedly. But, from that quote, can we really infer that we've got license to change the actual pitches that a composer wrote? I think Mahler (and most other composers) knew/know what they want to hear. To me, this is analogous to changing the words to an Emily Dickinson poem, reciting a Shakespeare soliloquy in pig-latin, or adding more paint to a Van Gogh. Would these works still be recognizable as the works of the original creators? Most likely. Would they represent what the original artist had intended? No, or else they would have done it that way.

I am in total agreement with your statement I just don't think that it is our responsibility to "improve" a piece by changing the composer's intended texture and timbre.
