I don't think that the tubas used in the first half of the 19th century sounded much like any of ours, so that would be hard to discuss, relating back to the "composer intent" theme. (Ranging in size from a 1960's Melton F all the way up to a Hirbrunner York model - ALL are radically louder and more resonant than any tubas Hector Berlioz ever heard, I would risk saying.)

Having practiced playing that line on an ophicleide enough times to get a really focused sound and good intonation, I'm not sure that the O. sound isn't a lot more eerie than the tuba sound.

I think the bassoon "buzz" is heard quite well on both the unison and octave tuba recordings that I've heard, as far as modern practices are concerned.

In summary: "It's a fun piece but a long wait for a few notes, isn't it?"
