If you'll listen carefully, most people who play pedal tones with the same embouchure as their regular range keep a tone rich in the normal overtones, but people who use the shifted, mostly-upper-lip shifted embouchure have a radically different tone that is harmonic-poor. In some cases, the shape of the sound almost approaches a sawtooth wave, and can be just as unpleasant.
