Back in my Music Therapy days I remember being fascinated by the work of Clive and Carol Robbins, who worked with children who were hearing impaired. They spent a considerable amount of time teaching instrumental play; drums and metallophones and the like, but they also worked with wind instruments and profoundly deaf folks, which was unheard of at the time.

I've forgotten more than I ever knew about them, but I remember being thoroughly impressed at some of the results they were achieving. They came to a convention in Minneapolis and presented their work, along with a group of their students, including the stereo-typical fat little kid playing the tuba. He didn't seem to have much endurance, but he sure could put out some serious sound!

Seemed to have a pretty good ear, too, if you'll pardon the expression. . .
