The 99-1 has a little smaller cup than the 98. I feel I have more control of the instrument with the 99-1, and it gives my sound a little more projection. The 98 is just a little too big for my taste. I would like to pick up a 98 sooner or later for when I need a little wider sound, but only for those instances. To be honest, I didn't like Monettes at all until I played the 99-1 prototype Chester had (this was a little over a year ago). It simply felt like the "right" mouthpiece for my Alexander, so I bought it.
