I have had similar success with smaller mouthpieces coupled with large horns. It seems that a larger throat helps with this combination. I recently discovered a York mouthpiece (#20)that has a diameter slightly smaller than a Schilke-Helleberg II, but with a shallower cup. The throat is absolutely enormous and yet it is a very playable mouthpiece. Pitch is surprisingly good and the tone is very "bouncy". On of my favorite mouthpieces is a Mirafone C3, (TU21) with the throat opened up. I opened the throat by hand using a round (hole) file but was told it is the diameter created by an "0" drill bit. This type of mouthpiece helps me to play a rather enormous Martin BBb in smaller ensemble and solo settings.
