No, a Crescent wrench is an adjustable open-end wrench--a movable jaw engages a knurled worm screw. The shape of the head roughly resembles that of a standard open-end wrench, unlike, say, a monkey wrench, left-handed or otherwise.

I've used a small wooden handscrew clamp (do the Aussies call them "cramps" like the Brits?) to loosen lacquered caps with success, but a strap wrench sounds like a good idea. Usually a tap with a soft-faced hammer breaks a stuck cap free enough to unscrew with finger pressure, but there are the tough cases.
