What would also help would be to sing or hum along with a piano. I'm not talking anything truly complex, but just hit a key, and vocalize an interval to it, playing the second note as necessary to maintain pitch. This will help you at least hear what the intervals sound like without having to deal with the mechanics of multiphonics.
That's like training wheels for your ear -- nothing more.
