Bravo! Bydlo is not the only orchestral part for which this is true, but it's a classic example. A review of historical performances of this piece reveals that the part is not always actually being played by the principal tubist. Many times it actually goes to a eupher pro explicitly commissioned for the performance. As Mr. Sousa once was quoted, "the artistic effect achieved is the sole criterion of value". That being said, the most important factor is the kind of sound desired by the music director. Lower brass instruments have evolved significantly since Ravel's orchestration of this wonderful piece, and the sound originally conceived by Mr. Ravel could reasonably be rendered by any number of different contemporary instruments and artists.
