My opinion is that doubling can help you as a musician:

a.) you get to play composers and or music that you would not play on tuba

b.) you get to play in different types of groups and styles (eg. chamber orchestra,folk, some types of jazz, bluegrass, etc...)

c.) it is interesting and enlightening to sit in an orchestral string section and get that perspective (or any other section)

d.) more opportunity to work in music.

I can not put the time in on my double (string bass) that I put in on tuba, so I have always been careful about accepting jobs within my ability as a bass player.
