In the course of my wanderings for material for a thesis, I came across the following article which gives a slightly different perspective on practice, schooling, and "professional experience" and, in particular, how to spend a summer.

If you read it you will note a few good themes, particularly, adaptability in the learning/working environment, and the importance of developing your "people skills".

This could be described as a bit of a "twist" on joing the circus as Harvey Phillips did as a youngster ( thats where he built up a fantastic set of fangers in a hurry.

We, as tubists, should keep in mind the need to experience the world and life outside the practice room. As Harvey would say, "music is life and life is music.

(in case the URL doesn't work, copy this and enjoy, even if it is written by one of those slip horn players. (www.trombone.org/articles/library/summer-mouse.asp)
