Your work with the trumpet reminds me of the way models were constructed of the circulatory systems of small animals--inject plastic and soak the carcass in potassium hydroxide to dissolve everything but the plastic.
But surely it must be possible to thread a cable through a tuba with a transducer on the end which would give a reading of the diameter and direction of the tubing at any given point. Why destroy a perfectly usable instrument?
