Without this you will never develope the ability to "hear" the changes. In addition, it matters not if your playing two beat or four beat, if you can't construct a bass line based on the changes.

Thirty years ago, in the midwest, there was a tuba player who fronted a band of really strong players. He had the reputation amongst players as "The World's Worst Tuba Player." He would start each tune with a four-note lick and NEVER change a thing for the rest of the tune!!! I still have a recording of the band----IT IS HYSTERICAL!
