Ditto on knowing scales and intervals. Start simple with playing the root and fifth of the chord. Once you get that down try experimenting with more notes, ascending and descending along the scale and arpeggios. Keeping solid time is also important. Most of all - have fun. Aebersold series is great for learning and practicing your scales.
By the way, if anyone is attending the Sacremento Jazz Jubilee this weekend, I'm playing with the 101st Army Band Dixeland Band. Will also be playing the Memorial Day service which is free if you don't want to pay for a Jubilee Pass.
