Sorry about that. The date given in the liner note is Oct/Nov 1970. I'm still pretty certain it was Chester on the tenor tuba part, but this does seem early for Sam. I recall being told that it was him, but then these urban myths. I do recall in the early 70s that Toby Hanks played the bass tuba part with the BSO in Strauss Don Quixote, Chester on tenor. It was broadcast live, but not recorded commercially.
I have sent for the back issue of Tuba Journal with Doug Yeo's article on the history of of tuba playing with the BSO. Perhaps that will identify the player.
