The thing that causes a clear articulation is the air, not the tongue. I used to have the same problem you have. I switched about 4 years ago. It took a while to get used to it, but I have been happy with the results.
What has helped me the most with the transition has been to focus on starting the note with lots of air and a little tongue for clarity. Try doing air attacks (no tongue at all). When you can get an air attack to start with a good tone and even pitch, then add the tongue to get the desired clarity. Your problem with "bullfrog" sounds is probably more air related than tongue placement related.
