Having recently tried all of the mentioned tubas at the Brasswind, I can second what Mike has to say. I play the 822 on a daily basis, and while it's a great all around horn, it doesn't have that special "German F" sound (Which is a GOOD thing in the mid-low register!)that you would want on typical F tuba orchestral literature. I prefer the sound of the Mirafone 181 to the 45slp, but the MW seems like it would hold together better in loud passages. The horn that I liked the best that was not mentioned already was the Rudi Meinl F. Beautifully made, great German sound, and for my way of playing, the best low register of all of them, except the Yamaha. Good luck.
