Answers (or opinions):

1) I am under the assumption that different mouthpieces reflect different vibrations though the horn, sometimes sharp, sometimes flat. It is ultimately up to the individual to change the "shape" of the pitch, if needed, to correct the sound. Typically, a larger cup, shank, rim equals a deeper, thus flatter projection, while a shallow cup, shank, and rim denotes a brighter, sharper sound. Just speaking from amateur experience... and

2) I too have a K&M stand, which beats putting my $XX,XXX HB-21 resting all of it's weight solely on the bell. But, if the tuba is not placed properly in the holder, then it WILL tip on occasion (Speaking from experience). All this being said, the stand beats anything else I have tried.
