Jay and Sven both make good points. Experimentation is still the only way to really find out what works. A longer mouthpiece does not necessarily equal lower pitch; hard to understand, but lots of times the oppposite is true. Also, Benade and the rest of the acousticians seem to think that the "popping frequency" and volume of the cup or backbore are the only important measurements and the shape has nothing to do with anything. I disagree. I've ignored popping frequency and I still seem to have designed mouthpieces that work. It seems to me that what's important is what it does ON the horn, not off. And I think it's pretty clear that cup and backbore shapes do make a considerable difference independently of the simple volume of them.
