I am talking only about the lowering of any given open tone and say nothing about the open tones being in or out of tune. Thats an entirely different problem. Compensating instruments have the correct amoount of tubing to get you acceptably in tune with a slight adjustment of the lip.

Of course a slide if it is long enough and your ear is good enough allows perfect intonation. However, most of us have enough of a challenge operating the valves properly when playing fast sixteenth notes that we could never also operate slides at the same time.

By the way the newest Bessons don't require the use of the left hand for a valve.
