Since I have a few years on you, Mark, I will take exception to the idea that the older horns were inherently better. The saying for Cerveny used to be this, "Try out about 100 horns and, if you're lucky, you might find 1 good one." The instruments of today are more consistant than those of the 50's, 60's, and 70's. The metal is worked in a more uniform manner and the instruments are assembled more consistently as well. That, of course, makes for a horn that is more consistant over the entire product line. Yes the metal is thinner than some and the braces are lighter, but that doesn't change the fact that the Cerveny tuba can be a good horn.
