If it was already decided, why do they go to the trouble and pay the expense to have a real audition? Every professional I have talked to says that they are really interested in the best player for the job. If that's Craig Knox, then it's Craig Knox. Just because he's had experience playing in the orchestra does not mean that he's already got the job. If somebody better shows up, I have no doubt that they would hire him/her. Why does it make sense to hire somebody who is not as qualified?
