Definatley fundamentals. If you could spend tons of time this summer with your Rochut and Arbans book, practicing lip slurs and flexibility, reaching for that bigger, darker sound, and honing your articulation, you'll feel like you haven't gotten anything accomplished. Then you'll hit marching band, and everyone will be blown away.

I also heard that there's this excercise that Szentpali does that's just sluring up and down the overtone series. Start with all the vavles down, and reach further and further up each time. (i.e. Overtones 1, 2, and back to 1; 1, 2, 3, 2, 1...1,2,3,4,5,6...3 octaves above where you started, then back down to one) Then just do the last 3 octave one a half step higher. Keep going up until you've reached the open fingering. If you can make that sound beautiful, you're definatley on track for success.
