'Compensating' has a very specific technical meaning when it comes to euphoniums, so Merriam-Webster's definition is inadequate and inapplicable. Whether it is automatic or not is besides the point. Mark F. is correct; it will not make a non-comp euph into a compensating one, but it seems like a nice gadget.
