All slides, mechanically operated like yours or manually operated like with trombones, tend to "fall off the straight line" when extended too far. This is a simple matter of physics in a world, where none of us would like to miss gravity.

The only mechanical solution would be to let the slide have a very tight fit. But that would take the mobility out of the slide. So the solution in your case would be not to extend the slide too far. A combination of heavy petrol jelly grease and valve oil also would be a good advise for lubrication.

Klaus,

who knows just a bit of the topic from triggers on trumpet and euph plus from 9 trombone slides, one of them with an extension handle. Not to speak of the throw rings on cornets and trumpets.
