Congrats to the University of Washington Tuba Studio for a terrific recital this evening.

A few days ago I read a post regarding a recital for the University of Washington Tuba Studio. I’m glad I saw it, because I went to check it out, and had a great time.

The performers were students of Edgar L. Phillips, who told me he has been an Adjunct Professor at the UW for about 5 years (hope I’m remembering that correctly). This is the first such event at the UW, and it was mostly organized by Tyler Benedict (a senior), Kevin Pih (a doctoral student). It seems like Mr. Phillips, with the help of a few enthusiastic students, is building a good program at the UW for Tuba Players.

The first half of the concert featured solos and a duet, as Follows:

Introduction and Dance, Barat, performed by Jonathan Zull, - tuba
Nocturno, Op. 7, Strauss performed by Tyler Benedict - tuba
Allegro, Vivaldi performed by Robert Cotter – tuba
Serenade NO. 12 for Solo tuba, Persichetti performed by Kevin Pih – tuba
Die Schone Mullerin, Schubert performed by Tyler Smith –tuba
Sonata in F minor, Telemann performed by Jeremy Horlick, -euphonium
Concert Duet One, Mozart/Self Tyler Benedict, Kevin Pih – tubas

The second half featured ensemble playing, as follows:

Bill Bailey, Garrett Nelson Bell, Peter Welling – euphonium
Tyler Benedict, Kevin Pih, tubas

O Sacrum Convivium, Victtoria UW Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble
Ricercare del 12 tono, Cherubini UW Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble
Contrapunctus 1, Bach UW Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble
Washington Post March, Sousa UW Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble

The UW Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble members: Euphoniums – Adam DeBruler, Nelson Bell, Peter Welling,; Tubas – Tyler Benedict, David Carver, Patrick Clark, Kevin Pih, Ben Sidwell, Jonathan Zull.

Again, Kudos to all involved. It’s great to see stuff like this being organized. Despite the miserable weather, it was a decent turn out. Hey, three bucks on campus parking for a great concert and a reception…not a bad Monday Evening!!
