You are correct about the majority of the positions being enlisted. If you want to be a player you must be enlisted. If you would like to conduct, you have the choice of being a warrant officer that commands post or division bands, or a commisioned officer that may eventually command a Major Command or Special band(see Sean's breakdown). This is not to say that one may not start as enlisted then become a warrant or commisioned officer. Many have accomplished this and still do. Commisioned officers start as 2nd Lieutenants in an executive officer position and then progress upward. Stick time varies, but you will be in front of ensembles. Staff positions are usually required for both commissioned and warrants if one is to make a career and this means time not in front of a band, but still working with band issues. Warrant officers are usually the only officer in the unit, therefore they get most of the stick time. Contact an Army Band Recruiting Liason office to get more specific details. Any recruiter in your area can get you that number. Hope I didn't bore anyone(probably did).
