The only real advantage that I can see is that many wooden or combination (wood & metal) mutes tend to play better in tune than the metal mutes do. The tone tends to be warmer and less buzzy - so it just depends on what sound you want. I've played on a combination mute a couple times and I like the sound, just not enough that I'll spend the money on one.
