brass vs. red brass a subtile difference in the sound. With trumpets and trombones, red brass has just a little more "buzz", because red brass has a higher copper content. With tubas, though, its very hard to hear a difference because the bore of a tuba doesn't offer much "buzz" anyway.

lacquer vs. silver Since silver plating on instruments is so very thin and the silver coating is almost nothing (on instruments manufactured today), this difference should be compared to "lacquered vs. UN-lacquered . Lacquered instruments have a coating (up to 1-2 thousandths of an inch, sometimes) of a plastic-like material (lacquer) which just barely MIGHT (??) subdue the vibrancy of an instrument (??). I believe that this is often a "princess and the pea" issue, and some who think they can tell a difference are actually simply observing the differences (with or without lacquer) of one instrument to the next.
