Absolutely right, Rick. I've never been on the end that had to do firing, but you're right, you can tell pretty fast if someone is not a good fit. It doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't be a good fit elsewhere, just that they don't work right in the job they're in. I've been in my current job for 14 years now, and I can screw up probably pretty badly as long as it's an isolated occurrence, because I'm now valued for what I know as well as what I can do. And besides, it really does turn into sort of a family at some point.
