In trained hands, a hammer and an internal mandrel is an appropriate technique for straightening a dented shank (the small, smooth, hammer is used to gently tap on the side of the shank, coaxing the metal to follow the contour of the internal mandrel; it is not used to hammer something into the shank).

Another technique that might work better than horn or trumpet mouthpiece is a smooth, tapered, metal punch; the harder steel surface will retain its shape as the mouthpiece is rubbed against it. A good way to fix the dent is to clamp the punch in a vice, then work the dented shank over the punch, using mostly sideways force, rather than trying to jam the punch directly into the backbore. That way, if the punch has a different taper than the backbore (almost a certainty), the shape will not become distorted.
