I've heard it done a lot with various mics, and have never liked the effects. If you're using distortion/effects pedals, the changed sound really clashes against what's coming out of the bell. I've got a nifty pick-up mute(like Yamaha's silent brass, but less ugly and much higher quality) that I use with my bass amp and pedals with pretty good results.
